New Engine

Post by Exekute » Fri Feb 20, 2004 1:23 pm

I was reading on my guild webpage that there was a new EQ graphics engine coming out that's supposed to make a HUGE difference, lots bigger than a few performance upgrades, we're talking like all options on with a geforce 2 type thing. First question is, how is this going to effect MQ? Second question is anyone have good information about this new engine? I'd like to read up on it while I'm bored at work.

It's called "Tunare", and SOE hasn't released any details. My guess is they will release it a few months ahead of EQ2 so they can work out the bugs on it.

How it affects MQ no one can say. Since quite a bit of what we do graphics wise involves substituting our own DirectX commands we shouldn't be impacted greatly, no more so than any other patch. I'd be more worried about the release of DX10, though Microsoft has been pretty good about keeping backwards compatibility.

The switch to dx9 soon doesn't really bother me that much....I don't think it's going to be THAT bad. (though, things may be broken a few days because I'm sure there will be patches for the patch on that one!)

Now, the new graphics engine (Tunare) might be different ...it just depends on how much they change/add.

Beta required DX9 so I'm wondering if we saw some of the new engine in beta. The graphics did seem to look better.

There was an improvement in graphics with the release of GoD. My wife noticed it right away.

We've been running DX9 for a long time, so there must be some internal changes to EQ that now take advantage of it.

The more I think about it, I'm sure we saw some of the new engine during beta. It had the ability to alt-tab out of eq, etc that didn't go live with GoD.

Yes, there is definately a differnence on test....things even LOOK differently.

Moreover, when I was going through the disassembly for the offsets on 2/10 I could see a lot of new code that wasn't really being used yet.

Chances are the DX9 stuff is going to be fairly harmless for us, involving things that we don't manipulate in the first place (ie, the way things "look", etc..) ...though, certain hacks that I hear about (that are not released with MQ2) might be affected.

Um. I have the ability to alt-tab out of EQ.

I don't believe testeqgame.exe is in the Application Combatibility Toolkit, which is probably why you could alt-tab in it.

oh wait, beta? did that use testeqgame, or a live eqgame, or something else?

actually its tunare 3.0, eq currently uses 2.0, apparently makes a whole lot better use of texture files, like going from bmps to jpegs, so ya, huge difference in loading and displaying zones, much less ram usage, etc., should be great for 2 boxin

Well, the thing about 2 boxing, doesn't MQ only work in background when using EQW? I thought I read it somewhere (but never actually tested it since I use EQW anyways). With the changes to DX9, EQW will be most likely be broken and probably not being fixed.
So it could have some impact unless I'm a total idiot and talking nonesense right now...
