Updating Macroquest

Post by n00bCoder » Thu Aug 12, 2004 4:34 pm

every single time i see the EQ patcher download the EQgame.exe file my eyes just bug out ( for example) I am just not a fan of having to re-install Macroquest every time. . . Normally due to the fact that i always seem to forget to backup my macro's, and poof! there gone(cant i ever catch a break? ) Anyways, is there a way to just update MacroQuest without having to recompile, or is such a feature not even possible? (lol a MacroQuest patcher would be REALLY cool, just prolly hard to make.) any ideas?

no. Every time the offsets change, the program needs to be recompiled. The authentication system ensures this.

edited: elaboration.

!!! Ey, is it just possible to copy the files out of the MQ2 zip file ontop of the existing ones instead? or did i just totally miss what you just said?

Don't blow away your old directory. Unpack MQ2 to a new directory (in my case its 0811), build it. Copy your old macros to /0811/release/macros. Copy the release directory whereever you run MQ2 from.

Everytime a new zip comes out for a patch, I use the zip alone to build, like just said. Then I copy over my macros, ini's and any other little things.
Not a big issue.

I have my MQ2-Latest folder in my My Documents folder. Then I have a shorcut for the .exe on the Desktop.

Everytime MQ2 is fixed, I download the new copy onto my desktop, unzip, and compile it(w/ plugins). Then I just make sure MQ2 isn't running, and move it to My Documents and have it write over all the old crap(it doesn't delete anything).

on some versions of windows it will, but with 2k and XP, I'm pretty sure you're okay doing that. I prefer the safe-than-sorry method, though.

Cept maybe Macroquest.ini ;)

I keep anything I download in My Documents\My Utilities, and extract in subfolders under there. Anytime I download MQ2-Latest, I always rename it immediately (MQ2-7-23, MQ2-8-12, etc.). This is all on my laptop. I keep a copy of the release folder on my desktop where I actually play date named also (Release 7-23, Release 8-12). I just can't get used to the idea of not having a previous backup, in case for some reason I have to restore something broken I guess. I use the laptop to update macros, etc. while playing on the desktop. Works great :) Also don't want to lose your mq2auth.h so another reason I like the backup.

I have a seperate folder also for the version I actually use. Just download and unzip to somewhere usually MQ2-date then I open it up make my custom mods to it then compile. Then go to the release folder and just copy out the DLL's and the EXE and just leave the rest there. That way anything I have added to my MQ directory doesn't get overwritten (biggest culprit was macroquest.ini, kept loosing all my changes :) )
